don’t let travel scams ruin your vacation
July 7, 2025
Planning a getaway should be exciting—but scammers are banking on that excitement to catch you off guard. Here are a few common travel scams and how to steer clear of them:
Fake Vacation Rentals
If a deal looks too good to be true, it probably is. Scammers post fake listings with gorgeous photos and low prices, then disappear after you send a deposit.
Avoid it: Only book through reputable travel sites. Be wary of anyone asking for payment via wire transfer, gift cards, or apps like Venmo.
“Free” Vacation Calls or Emails
You get notified you’ve won a free trip—but there’s a catch: taxes, fees, or a timeshare pitch.
Avoid it: Never give out credit card info to claim a “free” prize. Legitimate sweepstakes don’t require payment.
Phony Booking Sites
Fake websites or pop-ups mimic popular booking platforms. You think you’ve booked flights or hotels—until your confirmation never comes.
Avoid it: Double-check the web address, look for reviews, and avoid clicking on ads that seem suspicious.
Overpriced Airport Transportation
Scammers posing as drivers offer rides for sky-high prices or take you to the wrong place.
Avoid it: Pre-book transportation through trusted companies or use official airport taxi stands.
Wi-Fi Traps
Public Wi-Fi in airports or hotels can be a hacker’s playground.
Avoid it: Never access banking apps or enter passwords on unsecured networks. Use a VPN or your mobile hotspot when possible.
A little caution goes a long way in keeping your vacation fun—and fraud-free. Safe travels!
